FIRE SAFETY POLICY AND PROCEDURES

The Rocky Point Bird Observatory (RPBO) operates on Department of National Defence (DND) Land. Fire hazard is a major concern of DND at Rocky Point and all staff and volunteers must be cognizant of their legitimate concerns. This is especially true during the banding season since the earlier part of the season from mid-July to mid-August coincides with driest part of the year on Southern Vancouver Island.

Common sense is the best safeguard against human induced fire hazards. To minimize hazards further a no-smoking policy has been enacted and a no open flame policy has been instituted.

In case of fire, some immediate steps will be taken:

1. Inform the Bander in Charge immediately.
2. The Bander in Charge will have a cell phone with him at all times and will immediately call the Commissionaire's office at 363 5139 who will inform the DND Fire Station. The DND Fire Station number is 363 5165 but should only be used as a back-up. 911 should not be used since Port Angeles often picks up a cell phone call from Rocky Point rather than Victoria.
3. Tackle the fire with the means available until the fire equipment arrives.

Two stations will be set up with fire fighting equipment, one at the trailer and one at the banding shack.
The equipment at each location will consist of the following:

- 5-gallon pressure water fire extinguisher (this is always full for one-time immediate use)
- 5-gallon back pack (This will be filled initially and can be refilled - with sea water)
- 1 shovel, 1 rake, 1 mattock and a bucket.

Everyone on site should be familiar with the use of the equipment.

A copy of this protocol will be posted at the banding shack and at the trailer.
